- MANA! Mantra No. 9

FROM PACKAGING AND FOOD SCRAPS TO SOIL

There’s no clear solution in sight to tackle the abundance of food & packaging waste coming from Hong Kong’s restaurants and overflowing from our landfills . Hong Kong generates over 3,500 tonnes of food waste EVERYDAY. That’s enough to fill 3 olympic swimming pools! And you wonder where it goes…

MANA! collects all food scraps & compostable packaging - 4 tonnes a month to be exact - into 1 big bin & sends it off to be turned into compost.

We do this thanks to our sexy, accessible bins found at each MANA! outlet. These bins are carefully designed to encourage customers to separate and dispose of their leftovers & packaging. We’ve spent a long time coming up with a system that’s easy to use and effective. One for compost (food leftovers & packaging), one for glass & one for non-recyclables.

The soil is then supplied to local farms and garden centres, thus completing our circular economy.

We do regular visits to the facility that composts our food waste to uphold integrity and maintain a good relationship with the facility operators. If you’re a company or organisation and interested in using the facility then reach out to us at hello@mana.hk

 IMPACT REPORTS

We’ve been innovating our way towards Zero Waste since 2012. Every month we share up-to-date results from our composting initiatives, and other ways that we’re active in reducing our impact. Have a flick through and see for yourself what MANA! gets up to…

RECOGNISE & PROCESS PLA (PLANT PLASTIC) IN HONG KONG

We are pushing the Hong Kong government to replace conventional PET plastics with Plant-based PLA plastics. This transition will consist of the building and facilitation of more recycling plants that can compost these PLA plastics, as well as a new collection system to be put in place. We are almost at the 100,000 signatures needed for the government to take action. Help us reach our goal!
