Blogging at the edge of the shift… Part XIV (Plant Based Diet...)
There is a fundamental change happening all over the world. (as you well know by now if you are following my blogs...Yaawn! ;-))
A change unparalleled throughout our known human history. A profound shift in peoples’ assumptions about themselves, their place and role in the world, the universe in which they live, the meaning of life and what it means to be a homo sapien alive on this beautiful planet of ours in the 21st century. This shift, or change in consciousness is growing exponentially on a global level as more and more people are awakening to what our modern lifestyles are doing to our selves, our natural resources, other species with which we share our world, and the living fabric of life on earth itself. With more than 7 billion people and 100 billion farmed livestock animals all vying for limited natural resources our world is facing an unprecedented crisis that more and more people are sensing and feeling every day. This crisis is spearheading the positive change and nowhere is this change more visible than in peoples’ choices of food and the move towards a plant based diet.
As more and more people become aware of the health benefits this choice of food is having on them and the benefits it has on reducing their ecological footprints, and most importantly how it makes them feel on a daily basis, there is an explosion of health food restaurants and businesses thorough most parts of the world. This is quite visible here in HK and especially in the last 3 to 4 years or so, where there has been a proliferation of vegetarian, vegan & even raw eateries.
This corresponds with another explosion in local organic farms catering to this demand of health awareness in the territory. A jump from having only a handful of organic farms a few years ago to over 500 today!! As air, seaand land pollution start to become more apparent in HK so does the proliferation of healthy eating as this unconsciously counter balances the adversity of the former. Eating healthy has never been easier in HK. The availability of organic, biodynamic, permaculture and naturally grown foods is quite readily available in the major supermarkets, weekend markets, farmers’ markets and health food stores that abound in our city.
As the demand grows so does the supply.
Anyone who is seeing this as a trend is not looking clearly. The boom in health food also parallels a boom in Yoga, fitness and other mind body forms of practice that are taking our city by storm. We are also witnessing a boom in NGOs, charities and corporate socially responsible initiatives. As well as a proliferation in green technology, energy saving devices, natural medicine, eco friendly industries as well as creative solutions to long standing challenges and so forth. Perhaps the most apparent shift in HK today can be felt in our farmers who are no longing farming because they have no choice, but rather because they want to and love it. They are well educated college and university graduates who see a creative opportunity in being healthy food provides to their community. How novel!
The change is here to grow and it is being embraced wholeheartedly all over the world and HK is no exception.
