Blogging at the edge of the shift… Part I
What if there was a human movement made up of approximately 300,000,000 people,
(yes that is Millions) based on Humane Principles, Ecological Sustainability & Spiritual Values growing & thriving today? Do you think you would be aware of it ?
What if this movement was active in every corner of our World? Yes that includes every city in China and Hong Kong is no exception ;-)
What if this movement was made up of people from every known religion? Every Creed? Every Race? Every Economic Sector? Do you think you would be aware of it then?
What if this movement was so big that it could arguably be considered the biggest movement in history? Don’t you think you and just about anyone else who is “educated” would be aware of it, right? Anyone following world news or reading the media carefully would be aware of this movement right? Wrong.
Well, what can I say except I am as baffled as you are as to why most people I speak to about this answer “huh! No!”
Yet such a movement not only exists today but is growing exponentially, sustainably & is the fastest growing movement ever thanks to the global interconnectedness of human beings.
This movements origins are Indigenous Culture, The Environment & Social Justice.
I will expand more on this in my coming blogs.
For today, it will suffice to say that this nameless movement, is made up of a minimum of 130,000 organizations & a up to anything close to 500,000 organizations, for no one really knows. Sociologist studying this movement, yes it is being studied by scientists, have dubbed it the “ Cultural Creatives” ( see Paul Hawken’s work in the similar tilted book & his more recent book “Blessed Unrest” www.wiserearth.org )
I am not pretending to understand this movement and where it is going - for what is the limit to human potential ? - All I know is that I feel it & therefore I can see it everywhere.
Any one familiar with my work in Hong Kong over the last 20 years will recognize some aspects of this movement. I also know that I, or any one else, will never know it’s full potential or destiny. Yet the excitement in the wake of it is raw & alive & palatable.
There is no precedent to compare this movement to. There has never been a movement without a leader, a prophet, an ideology, a dogma, a religion, a nation, a creed before.
And this is exactly what makes this one sustainable & unstoppable. Therein lies my hope & what motivates me & helps me get out of bed in the morning.
I will close with the inspirational words of the late great Willis Harman, who foresaw this movement in the 1980’s and eloquently spelled it out for us in his seminal book Global Mind Change. “ Perhaps the only limits to the human mind are those we believe in.”
